Who are the Friends?
The Friends of Christ Church Cathedral are a group of people who love, support and pray for the Cathedral and its work. Members include those who have a deep affection for, or an attachment to the House and/or the Cathedral. They may live locally, within the Diocese of Oxford, throughout the United Kingdom or overseas. Many members of the clergy join the Friends because they were ordained in the Cathedral or were canons; volunteers make up a significant number and ex-choristers or their parents/grandparents are also well represented.
What do the Friends do?
The Friends raise funds for, and make grants to the Cathedral to support its maintenance, restoration, repair, conservation and beautification. Over the years Friends’ support for the Cathedral has included contributions towards:
• Restoration of the St Frideswide Shrine
• Lighting and sound systems in the Cathedral
• Installation of the glass doors
• New seating for the Crossings and aisles
• Recording projects for the Cathedral Choir
• Support of Choristers
• Renovation of the West End of the Cathedral
The Friends work to draw the Diocese and Cathedral more closely together, as well as to widen awareness of the Cathedral’s presence and the development of its ministry and mission.
Sponsor a Chair Campaign
The Friends of Christ Church Cathedral have purchased 400 Howe chairs to replace the unstackable wooden chairs and uncomfortable and aged yellow plastic seats bought decades ago. We hope now to recover some of that cost by this campaign. YOU can make an important contribution to our Cathedral by sponsoring a chair.
Each chair – or more than one if you wish – will bear an aluminium plaque inscribed with the name requested by the sponsor. This could be your own name, the name of someone you wish to commemorate, the name of a church or parish, club, school, company, local authority or any similar organisation. The cost of naming a chair has been set, for this campaign, at £125 per chair. The actual cost of each chair was £171. If you would like to support the project but can only donate a small amount, this will be equally welcome.
For more information download our Sponsor a Chair leaflet.
