George William Sparrow was the eldest son of William Arthur Sparrow and Amy Ellen Baldwin, of Albrighton Hall, Shrewsbury. In accordance with the Will of his maternal uncle, William Arthur changed the family name from Brown in 1881. His mother was a cousin of Stanley Baldwin, the Prime Minister.
George came up to Christ Church in 1896. In 1900 he published, privately, ”Rubaiyat of a Minor Statesman” his verses to show how the original – written some 800 years earlier - could easily be made “to fit the events of the present day”
His father died in 1913 and at the outbreak of war, George joined the 4th Battalion. Shropshire Light Infantry with the rank of lieutenant. He served in Palestine and, later, in France, having been promoted to Captain.
He was killed in action at Aubers Ridge.
Probate was granted to his brothers John Arthur Gwynn Sparrow Captain RAMC and Stanley Cyril Wellsley Sparrow, Solicitor, on 27 October 1919.
He left £144,743-14s-5d.
