John Simeon was born in London the second child and oldest son of Richard Ward, a barrister, and his wife Louisa Edith Simeon, daughter of Sir John Simeon Bt.
In 1881 the family were living at 21 Onslow Square. It is likely that John Simeon was educated at The Oratory School which was then in Edgbaston, Birmingham (now in Woodcote, just north of Reading) from 1888-1893. He may have briefly attended Eton, as did his cousins, before coming up to Christ Church in 1896.
He joined the Prince of Wales’ Own Volunteer Rifle Corps and, possibly, served in India but resigned his commission on March 31st 1908, “with permission to retain his rank of Captain and Honorary Major and to wear the prescribed uniform.”
John Simeon moved to the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, Canada and become a fruit farmer. He married and had at least one child, Diana, later the wife of Ivor Desmond Greenwell. At the outbreak of war, he joined Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry [Eastern Ontario Regiment].
He died of wounds at No. 7 Station Hospital, Boulogne.
