SAYING GOODBYE SERVICE – 25 April
Christ Church is honoured to join a large number of other Cathedrals across the country in hosting a service to support those who have lost a child at any stage of pregnancy, at birth or in infancy. This Saying Goodbye Service is sponsored by the Mariposa Trust and takes place on Saturday 25th April at 3pm. All are welcome.
INSTALLATION OF THE LADY MARGARET PROFESSOR
OF DIVINITY - 25 April
We are delighted to welcome the eminent Patristic scholar, Professor Carol Harrison, as the new Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity. Professor Harrison will be installed as a Canon of Christ Church during Evensong on Saturday 25 April at 6pm. All are welcome.
EASTER CAROL SERVICE – 3 May, 6pm
The Cathedral Choir will be leading a celebratory service of lessons and carols for Eastertide on Sunday 3 May at 6pm. All are welcome.
VE DAY BELLRINGING – 9 May
In common with many other Cathedrals and Greater Churches across the country Christ Church will ring its bells to mark the seventieth anniversary of VE Day at 11am on Saturday 9 May.
CATHEDRAL AGM – 10 May
The Annual General Meeting of Christ Church Cathedral will be held in the Deanery at 4pm on Sunday 10 May. All are welcome.
EDWARD STOURTON LECTURE – 13 May
Edward Stourton of the BBC will speak of his book, Cruel Crossing: Escaping Hitler across the Pyrenees, at the annual Richard Harries Lecture hosted by the Oxford Council of Christians and Jews in the Blue Boar Lecture Theatre on Wednesday 13 May at 7.30pm. The respondent will be the Bishop of Dorchester, the Rt Revd Colin Fletcher. All are welcome and drinks will be served from 7pm.
FOR GOD’S SAKE – 13 & 20 May
Following the successful launch at Christ Church in January, For God’s Sake, a series of events involving Anglican Religious Communities, continues with two Guided Prayer sessions. Sister Judith SLG will lead workshops introducing the practices of contemplative prayer at the University Church on Wednesday 13 and 20 May from 8 until 9.15pm. All are welcome.
THE RIFLES – 24 May
Oxfordshire’s local regiment, The Rifles, will be granted the Freedom of the City of Oxford on Sunday 24 May. Soldiers will gather in Christ Church Meadow and march along St Aldates and Cornmarket to give the salute in St Gile
HOPE IN A TIME OF DARKNESS – 18 June
We are delighted to welcome the General Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church, Bishop Angaelos, to preach at the Choral Eucharist at 6pm on Thursday 18 June. Bishop Angaelos’ sermon, ‘Hope in a Time of Darkness’, forms part of a series of events across Oxford, Palestine Unlocked: further details are available at http://www.palestineunlocked.com/
ORDINATIONS – 4 July
On Saturday 4 July three groups of ordinands (trainee clergy) will be made Deacon to serve in the Diocese of Oxford. Candidates from the Archdeaconry of Buckingham will be ordained at 10am, from the Archdeaconries of Oxford and Berkshire at 2pm, and from the Archdeaconry of Dorchester at 6pm. Please pray for these clergy at the beginning of their ministry.
T.S. ELIOT’S FOUR QUARTETS - 9 July
Marking the 50th Anniversary of T.S. Eliot’s death, the Friends of Christ Church Cathedral are delighted to present a complete reading of Eliot’s Four Quartets, read by Robert Jackson, prior to a performance of Beethoven’s String Quartet No.15, Opus. No. 132, in association with Oxford Philomusica. The event begins at 8pm on Thursday 9 July. Tickets, at £20 each, will be available shortly from Tickets Oxford at www.oxfordplayhouse.com/ticketsoxford or on 01865 305305. Professor Peter McDonald will give a pre-performance talk at 4.30pm in the Priory Room, Christ Church.
SUMMER LECTURES – ‘THE POETRY OF FAITH’ 22 July to 12 August
The Cathedral’s annual summer lectures will be held in the Priory Room every Wednesday at 4.30pm from 22 July to 12 August. This year’s theme is ‘The Poetry of Faith’ and speakers will include the Revd Richard Smail on Christina Rossetti and the Sub Dean on Geoffrey Hill. Further details will be available shortly. Admission is free, all are welcome and there is no need to book in advance.
RAMBERT BALLET SCHOOL: ‘MOVING VISIONS’ – 10-14 August
The Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance will once again be performing sacred ritual dance as part of their MA Programme in the Cathedral this summer, from 10 – 14 August. Further details of their performances will be available soon.
