COMPLINE – Mondays in Lent
On Mondays during Lent Compline will be sung at 8.30pm. A short address will be delivered each week by members of the Cathedral Chapter and the office will be sung by members of the Cathedral Choir under the direction of Alexander Pott, the Organ Scholar. On Monday of Holy Week, 30 March, a version of the Tenebrae liturgy will be sung at 8.30pm.
ARCHBISHOP GEORGE CAREY - OXFORD LITERARY FESTIVAL
We are delighted to welcome Lord Carey of Clifton, former Archbishop of Canterbury, who is visiting Oxford to take part in the Literary Festival. He will preach at Matins on Palm Sunday.
PALM SUNDAY – 29 March
Sung Matins will take place at 10am and the Cathedral Choir will sing Palestrina’s Miserere.
The 11.15am Eucharist on Palm Sunday will begin at Tom Tower, with the procession led by a donkey across the quadrangle into the Cathedral.
HOLY WEEK ADDRESSES
During Holy Week the Sub Dean, Canon Edmund Newey, will give a series of meditative addresses. These addresses will be given during Evensong at 6pm on Palm Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday of Holy Week and on Good Friday. On Tuesday of Holy Week at 7.30pm Canon Sarah Foot will lead a meditation accompanied by organ music by J.S. Bach, Alastair Putt and Deborah Pritchard, played by Clive Driskill-Smith and Alexander Pott.
ST JOHN PASSION – Wednesday 1 April, 7.30pm
The Cathedral Choir will be singing Bach’s St John Passion as a Holy Week devotion. There will be no entrance charge, but you are encouraged to give generously to support the cost of the performance.
CHRISM MASS – Thursday 2 April, 11am
This service draws clergy and others from across the Diocese of Oxford to renew their ordination vows and to re-commit themselves to Christian discipleship. The service also includes the blessing of oils used in churches throughout the diocese at services of baptism and confirmation, and for anointing the sick. The
service is open to all, and the preacher is the Bishop of Dorchester.
SUNG EUCHARIST & WATCH – Maundy Thursday 2 April, 7.30pm
This service, sung by the Cathedral Choir, commemorates Jesus’ washing of his disciples’ feet and his Last Supper. The service is followed by the symbolic stripping of the altar and the ‘watch’ – a vigil that recalls Christ’s agony in the garden of Gethsemane. Those attending the Eucharist and Watch may feel free to stay for as long as they wish up until the end of the vigil at midnight.
GOOD FRIDAY – 3 April
10am Good Friday Liturgy: a choral service with the Cathedral Choir, including Victoria’s St John Passion
12 noon Journey to the Cross: a short inter-active service, especially suitable for children of 4 +. The service will last around 45 minutes
6pm Evensong: with address
EASTER VIGIL – Easter Eve, 4 April, 8pm
The first service of Easter, sung by the Cathedral Consort, includes baptism and confirmation conducted by the Bishop of Dorchester.
EASTER DAY SERVICES – 5 April
As usual, there will be an 8am service of Holy Communion according to the Book of Common Prayer. The preacher at 10am Choral Matins is the Dean of Christ Church, and the preacher at the 11.15am Sung Eucharist is the Bishop of Dorchester. Choral Evensong will take place at 6pm. All choral services on Easter Day are sung by the Cathedral Choir.
INSTALLATION OF THE LADY MARGARET PROFESSOR OF DIVINITY Professor Carol Harrison will be installed as a Canon of Christ Church and the Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity at Evensong on Saturday 25 April. All are welcome.
EASTER CAROL SERVICE – Sunday 3 May, 6pm
The Cathedral Choir will be leading a celebratory service of lessons and carols for Eastertide. All are welcome.
