Worship at Christ Church
The Cathedral is our College Chapel and is the vibrant centre of a worshipping community made up of students and staff, people from the city and diocese of Oxford and many international visitors. Members of the college are warmly invited to the College services which take place here and to any of the Cathedral services too, at which our world famous Cathedral Choir sing almost every day. Full details of all the following are provided on the Chaplain's termcard.
Our weekly Communion service is simple, friendly and spiritual, with a short address. We found that singing hymns was quite hard first thing in the morning, so now we rely on college musicians to play a piece of gentle music each week in the middle of the service, which is really wonderful. Communion is shared around the altar and afterwards we have breakfast together in the McKenna Room. Several visiting preachers come each term.
Corporate Communion takes place at 6pm on Thursday of 4th Week every term and is a joyful celebration for the whole college. Students and Staff, Tutors and Canons all come together in the Cathedral for the service and then dine together in the Hall. Visiting preachers are regularly invited and the College Choir sings a setting of the Eucharist.
Evensong takes place in the Cathedral at 6pm each day and is sung by the Cathedral Choir. On Sundays the service includes prayers for the College and the readings are read by Christ Church members. Services each Sunday are 8am - Holy Communion; 9am - Collge Communion; 10am - Sung Matins; 11.15am - Sung Eucharist; 6pm - Sung Evensong. Everyone is welcome.
College Choir Evensongs - 6pm on MondaysIn termtime the College Choir sing Evensong in the Cathedral at 6pm every Monday from second week, except in fourth week when they sing at the Corporate Communion service. After each service they eat together at formal Hall. Members of the College are warmly welcomed to these services. The College Choir also sing Evensong in other Cathedrals, churches and colleges by invitation. If you would like more information, please contact Suzanne Green, suzanne.green@chch.ox.ac.uk
The last Sunday Evensong of Trinity Term has been used over the last few years as an opportunity to especially remember those who are leaving Christ Church. The service includes special prayers and readings led by members of the college and the Censors. Everyone is most welcome, including friends and family.
On the last Sunday of Michaelmas Term a wonderful service of Advent music and readings is arranged each year, using college readers and with the Cathedral Choir singing. The Cathedral is filled to capacity for this service, to which most members of college come, with friends and family.
