April 8th-11th 2013
Background
The symposium will be the 7th in an international series started in Sheffield in 1993 and held most recently in Montreal (2007) and Chengdu (2010). The symposium normally attracts key researchers in fretting fatigue from around the world and provides an opportunity for informal discussions as well as oral and poster sessions
Venue
The symposium will be held at Christ Church, Oxford. Christ Church was founded in 1546 by the English monarch (Henry VIII) and is today a world renowned institution, both for its academic role and for its status as the cathedral of the city of Oxford. The symposium will be fully residential, with delegates accommodated in comfortable college accommodation in the centre of Oxford. All meals will be provided, and there will be a conference dinner in the college hall (known to many from the Harry Potter films!). Conference sessions will take place within the college, using a recently completed lecture theatre and adjacent rooms.
Oxford is a historic city and popular tourist destination, situated approximately 100km North-West of London and has frequent coach connections to London Heathrow and London Gatwick airports. There are also excellent rail connections to central London (for Eurostar) and to Birmingham airport.
Format
The conference will take place over four days, with arrival on the afternoon of Monday 8th April, and departure after lunch on Thursday 11th April. The conference dinner will take place on Wednesday evening. Much of the conference will be run as a single session for oral presentations, but parallel sessions and/or posters will be used where appropriate.
Registration fees will be approximately £700 (residential), with a reduced price non-residential option.
Topics
Topics for the conference will include (but will not necessarily be restricted to):
• Test methods in fretting fatigue
• Recent experimental results in fretting fatigue
• Theories and mechanisms of fretting fatigue or fretting wear
• Modelling of fretting fatigue and/or fretting wear
• Applications and case studies, including the use of coatings, surface treatment and other palliatives
Publication
Accepted abstracts will be printed in a book of abstracts, given to each delegate. A selection of authors will be invited to submit full papers for peer review and publication in a special issue of Tribology International.
