eMatters June 2013

January 2014

Dear Member of the House,

Greetings, and welcome to the first e-Matters of 2014. Incredibly January has nearly gone, not so incredibly, so has my New Year resolution.

“Other Worlds and Imaginary Beings” is the title of the fascinating new Exhibition in the Upper Library, featuring all sorts of monsters and ethereal beings, all very similar to a Commemoration Ball really. Do try to visit the exhibition, or if that is unrealistic why not order one of the splendid exhibition catalogues?

Now is also the time to order your Ball tickets, as they are selling fast! Three years is a long time to wait for the next one, and I can assure you more than one will not come along at the same time.

Parents who have not already signed up to the Family Programme are invited to do so now by contacting Leia. The lunch at the end of term is always a jolly affair. Members who matriculated in 1964 are encouraged to book sooner rather than later for their 50th Anniversary dinner. Numbers stand at 60+ so far.

Other events on the horizon include Torpids: 5th - 8th March, the Oxford Literary Festival: 22nd - 30th March, and the Boat Race on the 6th April.

North American Members should look out for communications regarding the Choir Tour from 27th March to the 9th April, and the North American Reunion in New York from the 10th – 12th April.

With very best wishes to you all,

Simon.

1964 matriculands are invited to dinner at the House on Friday 21st March, in order to celebrate their 50th year anniversary.

This occasion will provide the opportunity to meet old friends and acquaintances, with a more informal atmosphere than a larger gaudy. Guests are welcome, and accomodation is available.

The poetry of the First World War is some of the most important and influential work of the twentieth century, shaping our attitudes to war and still having enormous cultural resonances one hundred years on.

Other Worlds and Imaginary Beings:

From Medieval Illumination to 19th-Century Drawings

A new exhibition will open on 27 January 2014 in the Upper Library at Christ Church. The exhibition aims at revealing how widespread pagan and Christian imagery about monsters and ethereal beings is. Among the exhibits on display will be manuscripts, early printed books and sketches by Lewis Carroll, his younger brother Wilfrid and Dean Liddell, as well as a selection of drawings by Vice-Admiral Lord Mark Kerr (1778-1840) on loan from the private collection of Hector McDonnell (1965, Modern History).

The exhibition is curated by Hector McDonnell and Cristina Neagu.
Visiting hours Monday - Friday: 9.30 am - 1.00 pm; 2.00 pm - 4.30 pm.

A detailed illustrated catalogue is available for purchase for £5.
