Arthur Arnold was born at Teignmouth, Devonshire, the son of Capt. W.F. McIlwaine of the Royal Marine Light Infantry, and Sophia St. John.
In the 1880s and 1890s the family were living at 25 Blomfield Terrace, Paddington. Arthur was educated at St. Paul’s School and came up to Christ Church in 1903. He took a B.A. Hons in History.
He was articled to Edward Wilson of Newport and Shanklin, Isle of Wight. On the outbreak of war he joined the 3rd Battalion, Hampshire Regiment with the rank of Private and in April 1915 was gazetted 2nd Lieut. Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. He was killed in action on 5 March 1916.
He is commemorated on the Isle of Wight at Arreton War Memorial and on a memorial plaque in St. Paul’s Church, Newport.
Probate was granted to his younger, unmarried, sisters, Cecilia Lambert McIlwaine and Helen McIlwaine. His Effects amounted to £1,510 4s 0d.
