Ralph George was born in Kingsclere, Newbury, Berkshire, the third son of John Barnes, a solicitor, and his wife Constance.

In the 1911 census, he is shown living with his parents in Kingsclere, employed as a solicitor with an insurance company.

He commenced Service on 23 November 1916 as a 2nd Lieutenant 8th London Regiment (Post Office Rifles) and served in France and Belgium. He was killed in action on 30 October 1917 and is commemorated on Panel 150 to 151 on the Tyne Cot Memorial.

His name appears on the War Memorial at Kingsclere together with that of his younger brother Eric who was killed on 1 November 1914 aged 20.

Administration of his estate was granted to his widowed mother: £125.18s.2d
