Frank Shirley was born in 1895, the youngest child of George Bellamy Nalder by his second wife, Kathleen Retta Middlemost. His father was a solicitor, a member of a large family of solicitors in the Shepton Mallet area of Somerset, he died in the winter of 1899 in South Stonham, Hampshire where Frank had been born.
In 1901, the family were still living in South Stonham, but by 1911, they had moved to St Anne’s on Sea in Lancashire, Frank and two of his sisters were at home with his mother when the census was taken. In 1911 he went to Shrewsbury School.
Frank was gazetted on 25 September 1914 as a temporary Second Lieutenant in the Shropshire Light Infantry. He served in France in 1915. He was in Greece from 1915 until 1918 by which time he was a Captain.
He was killed in action at Pitt Ridge.
His mother was living at 3 Wickliffe Avenue, Church End, Finchley when she applied for Probate. It was granted on 12 December 1919, stating that he had died “on or since September 21st 1918 in Bulgaria.” He left £164-7s-2d.
At Oldham Hall, Shrewsbury School there is a carved high-backed oak chair in his memory. It bears the inscription towards the base of the back
