Lancelot Joseph Moore was born at Ballyeighan, Parsonstown, King’s County, Ireland to Joseph Studholame and Mary Hastings Davis, the youngest of their five children and the only surviving son.
He was educated at Uppingham and came up to Christ Church in 1903. His father died the following year.
In 1907, he became a member of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland.
He commenced service in the 7th Leinster Regiment at the outbreak of war and served in France. He was gazetted as a Temporary Second Lieutenant from 17 December 1914. His promotion to Temporary Captain was made on 1 May 1916 but not gazetted until 4 December, after his death. He had died at the Battle of the Somme on 9 September 1916, having been Mentioned in Despatches.
He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 16C.
Probate was granted to his mother, Mary Hastings Studholme, widow, his sister Mary Hastings Vivian*, widow, and his other surviving sister Rosalind Studholme.
His effects in England totalled £40,855-1s-11d. His Will was sealed in London on 29 January 1917.
*Mary Hastings Studholme married Lt. Col Charles August Vivian who was killed at Ypres on 27 April 1915. They had two sons both of whom were killed in WW2.
