Cyril was born in London, the second son of Charles James and Mary Gwyer. They moved, later, to Eywood Titley, Herefordshire. He was educated at Winchester and was up at Christ Church from 1904 until 1909.

He joined the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment on 27 September 1914 as a 2nd Lieutenant. At the time of his death, near St Leger, he was a Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards.

He married Constance Francis Monckton at Cannock, Staffordshire in 1914, and they had a son Geoffrey. She lived at Somerford House, Brewood, Stafford which belonged to the Monckton family from 1779 until the present day.

Probate was granted to his widow on November 11th 1918. He left £10,346-0s-1d
