James Gerald was born in Lytham the eldest son of James Alexander Stretton Fair, a land agent, of The Birks, Lytham and his wife, Lucy Beatrice Cross, daughter of the late Herbert Shepherd Cross of Hamels Park, Buntingford. He was baptised at St Cuthbert’s Church, Lytham on 28 August.

His grandfather, Thomas Fair, also a land agent, was one of the early residents of the new town of Lytham.

He was educated at Moorland House School, Heswall, Cheshire from 1906, following his father to Charterhouse (Saunderites House) from Oration Quarter September 1911, to Summer Quarter 1915. He left Charterhouse in July 1915 and was commissioned in the Duke of Lancaster’s Own Yeomanry on 23 October. The following September, he transferred to the R.F.C. and was gazetted as a Flying Officer with 27th Squadron on 6 January 1917, serving with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders.

He was killed in an aerial fight at Hargicourt when returning from a bombing raid.
His Estate amounted to £216 16s 3d, probate granted to his father.

His name is on the Arras Flying Services Memorial and the Charterhouse Roll of Honour.
