Robert Denis Stewart was the only child of Stanley Greville and Edith Harding. He was baptised at St. Luke’s Church, Kensington on 27 December 1885.
At the time of Robert’s birth, his father was a builder and contractor in Pimlico, London under the name of the Peto Brothers. He retired in 1893. In 1911, the family were living at 15 Lowndes Square, but had moved to Lake House, Salisbury by the outbreak of the war.
Robert was educated at Harrow and came up to Christ Church in 1905. In the 1911 census he is described as “living on his own means”.
On 4 May 1912, he was gazetted Second Lieutenant [on probation] in the 4th Battalion, The Bedfordshire Regiment. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 17 March 1913. He served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders and was killed on 7 November 1914.
He is commemorated on Panel 31 and 33 at the Menin Gate.
Probate was granted to his father. His effects totalled £2369-19s-4d.
