Christ Church Picture Gallery exhibited fifty photographs of writers, artists, actors and academics by the American photographer Judith Aronson. The photographs were taken in Britain and America over a period of thirty years.
The images depict more than just the likeness of the sitter, they capture relationships; between husband and wife, son and father, mother and daughter. Many of the photographs were taken in the sitters’ own homes where they are surrounded by their families and possessions.
Aronson’s exact observation and acute sense of the personal allows her to create an intimacy between the camera and the subject that catches and characterises them at their most relaxed.
