Christ Church Library

The spacious College Library is an important resource centre, primarily intended to provide undergraduate readers with the books they need for their studies. There is also a separate Law Library with a valuable and increasing collection of legal works. Christ Church Library contains what is probably the largest and richest collection of early printed books and manuscripts in Oxford after the Bodleian Library. Its holdings are of international importance and are particularly rich in music, theology, classics, travel books, numismatics, early science, medicine and Hebrew studies.

Important notice

The Library will be closed to all external readers during major restoration work from 16 March to late October 2009 and from April to late October 2010.

The Library has reopened now. It is 'business as usual' for Christ Church members. The East and West Libraries are ready for their readers and fully functional. The Upper Library, with its manuscripts and early printed book collections, will take a little longer. Not long, as all involved in getting it back to us are doing their very best to finish their work. As to the scaffolding, it is slowly coming down, but the time-frame here is another 6-7 weeks until that is finalized.

During the summer months the library changed into a spectacular building site. The roof  was thoroughly and painstakingly restored. Likewise all windows and floor boards. The library is now completely rewired. Access to the internet  has been significantly improved. The whole building was also provided with wireless connections. Most visible though, at the end of the first stage in this project, is the new lighting scheme. A lot more needs to be done. But this is scheduled for next summer, when the Entrance hall and the East and West Libraries will be completely redecorated, and the Upper Library will undergo conservation cleaning. A new book security system will also be in place when we reopen at the beginning of next academic year. At this moment though, we wish to thank all those in the various construction teams who worked unbelievably hard so that we could reopen in time.
