Music on the Move

A new exhibition in Christ Church Upper Library, including: musical works-in-progress (compositional drafts); works transmitted in more than one state (perhaps because of a composer's changes of mind); music that circulated in single-sheet format; pieces adapted to make them fit for different uses; and modern editions that change the appearance of musical works.

This display, curated by Dr John Milsom, has been created for Oxford music undergraduates contemplating the paper ‘Edition with Commentary’. It includes manuscripts and printed editions from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, and works by William Byrd, Robert White, Thomas Morley, Christopher Gibbons, John Blow and Musgrave Heighington.

The exhibition will be open in Christ Church Upper Library between  19 November 2009 and 12 February 2010.
