MARTIN ANDREWS & ALAN MAY, Workshop on Early Printing and Casting Type.
To illustrate how books were made Alan May and Martin Andrews will talk about the early history of printing and will show everyone. This workshop will provide an intensive, hands-on introduction to the history of books and printing. It consists of a unique combination of practical experience, as well as a broad historical survey of the field. The practical side of the workshop will concentrate on printing and typecasting, with students having the opportunity to cast type in a hand mould. They will also print their own 'Gutenberg Bible' page. The press in action was built by Alan May for a programme commissioned by BBC 4, The Machine That Made Us, presented by Stephen Fry and broadcast in 2008.
