Microfilms of library materials

This page gives details of all microfilms of Christ Church Library materials which are available commercially. Subject to conservation considerations, other volumes may be microfilmed if required upon request to the library staff.

Papers of William Wake

The correspondence and papers of William Wake (1657-1737) cover his time as Bishop of Lincoln (1705-1716) and the first ten years (1716-1726) of his time as Archbishop of Canterbury. The main collection of thirty-one folio and quarto volumes was bound up in Wake's lifetime, and bequeathed to Christ Church where they have remained since Wake's death. A few other letters are found in Christ Church MSS 352, 353, 378, 541b and 679, and the relevant portions of these have also been filmed as part of the microfilm set. The manuscript volumes themselves are referred to in print in at least three different ways, any of which is acceptable. For example, the first volume may be cited in any of the following ways:

Christ Church MS 231
Wake Letters 1
Arch.W. Epist.1

Within each volume, the sequential numbering tends to refer to items, which may consist of more than one folio. Thus the second leaf of the twenty-third item of volume ten would have to be cited as:

Wake Letters 10, no. 23, f.2r

In most of the volumes the item numbering is in pen, and may be contemporary with the binding of the manuscripts. A few of the volumes bear no such item numbering, and these have been foliated more recently in pencil, some time subsequent to the publication of Norman Sykes' biography of Wake in 1957. If you are in any doubt as to the numbering of any item in the collection, please contact the library staff.

Correspondence from Wake survives in other collections in Britain and western Europe. Please see the bibliography in volume two of William Wake, Archbishop of Canterbury, 1657-1737 by Norman Sykes (Cambridge University Press, 1957).
