Having enjoyed Maths as A-Level, my teachers encouraged me to apply to Oxford and informed me that Christ Church was an excellent place to study. The college is one of the largest and most beautiful in Oxford and is a great environment to be a part of. There is a huge range of people from all over the world, and the tutorial system gives you the chance to discuss problems in detail with some of the best mathematicians in the country.
Learning at degree level is far more independent that at school and the Maths course at Oxford is very different to that studied at A-Level, but the introductory lectures ensure that everyone knows all the material needed to get started. The first year of the course contains a huge range of pure and applied topics, whilst the third and fourth years allow you to pick whichever options you prefer. I decided to write an extended essay and dissertation, which has given me the opportunity to write about fascinating subjects under the supervision of world experts.
The college bar and common room provide great places to relax and socialise, and there is also a huge range of extra-curricular activities available. I have become a member of the college pool team, and have also tried my hand at Ultimate Frisbee and rowing. There is also the option to become a member of the world-famous Oxford Union, and there are always plenty of black-tie dinners and college balls to attend!
Christ Church is a great place to study Maths and enjoy all the experiences that Oxford has to offer. I’ve made some great friends here and have hugely enjoyed the course and life as an Oxford student.
