Christ Church's two new Canon Professors were installed as Residentiary Canons of the Cathedral at a special ceremony on Saturday 6th of October. The Crown Appointments Secretary read the Letters Patent from Her Majesty the Queen appointing The Revd Professor Nigel Biggar (shown in the centre, above), Professor of Theology at Trinity College Dublin and Canon of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, to the Regius Chair of Moral and Pastoral Theology at the University of Oxford; and Professor Sarah Foot (shown on the right, above), Professor of Early Medieval History at the University of Sheffield, to the Regius Chair of Ecclesiastical History. The Bishop of Oxford was present to give the final blessing.

The Professorship of Moral and Pastoral Theology is attached to a Canonry of Christ Church. The post holder must therefore be ordained, or prepared to become so. The Professorship involves teaching Christian Ethics, Ascetic and Mystical Theology and study of the types of Christian experience.

The Professorship of Ecclesiastical History is also attached to a Canonry at Christ Church, although the postholder can be a lay Church member. Canon Foot will teach and lecture on ecclesiastical history and on both the early and later teachings of the Christian Church and is the first woman to be Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History.
