Sir John Gurdon, who was educated at Christ Church, has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for his pioneering work in cloning and stem cells.
Sir John came up to study at Christ Church in 1952, and read Zoology. His DPhil in Oxford was on the subject of nuclear transplantation in frogs, and after a period at the California Institute of Technology he returned to work in Oxford's Zoology Department and became a member of the Governing Body at Christ Church. Since then Sir John has worked mostly in Cambridge. He is now an Honorary Student of Christ Church.
