The 8th Tower Poetry Summer School for young poets aged 18-23 was held in Christ Church, Oxford from 28-31 August 2012 when 14 students from different parts of the UK were lucky enough to be tutored by Alan Gillis (Lecturer in English at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland) and Kevin Young (Atticus Haygood Professor of Creative Writing and English and Curator of Literary Collections and the Raymond Danowski Poetry Library at Emory University, Atlanta, USA).
In addition to the workshops, Dr Mishtooni Bose (Christopher Tower Student and Tutor in Medieval Poetry in English, Christ Church) gave an evening talk on ‘Found in translation: modern poets and Old English craft’. Dr Peter McDonald (Christopher Tower Student and Tutor in Poetry in the English Language) joined the group for the final reading on Friday morning.
Tower Poetry was funded by a generous bequest to Christ Church, Oxford, by the late Christopher Tower. Its aims are to stimulate an enjoyment and critical appreciation of poetry, particularly among young people in education, and to challenge people to write their own poetry.
