Second year Christ Church student Tom Lees has been announced as Oxford University Sport Walter’s Sportsman of the Year at a reception at the OURFC grounds at Oxford University Sport. The award is given to a man who has shown excellence in his chosen sport but also contributed to the life of their club or to their sport in other ways. Tom's nomination is below and speaks for itself - we warmly congratulate him on his award.
Tom Lees – OUMPA (WINNER)
Tommy has had a breakthrough year by firmly cementing his place as one of the top GB senior level athletes, despite still only being 19 years old. He was ranked 4th in the country after the GB winter selection series, out qualifying some of the London 2012 athletes. This ranking was sufficient to see Tom selected to his first senior World Cup in Chengdu, China competing against the top athletes in the world where he finished a creditable 45th. Not just a GB competitor Tommy also claimed the BUCS title with a massive score of 5,600pts helping Oxford secure the team title. He was also the individual winner of the men’s Modern Pentathlon varsity match, which saw Oxford claim an unprecedented 17th consecutive Varsity win and a record score to match. Tommy has shown great determination and dedication to his sport by committing many weeks in and out of term time to training at the high performance centre in Bath whilst still managing to attain the most enviable of results in his prelims. He brings a level of professionalism and expertise to the Modern Pentathlon club that filters down right to the beginners and it is a real asset to have someone of his calibre training with us.
