Sir John Gurdon is Christ Church’s only living Nobel laureate, receiving the 2012 prize for Physiology or Medicine, shared with Professor Shinya Yakamata. The award recognised the profound consequences for human knowledge of his demonstration that mature animal cells can be reprogrammed to become stem cells, which can then develop into the various sorts of cells which form different types of animal tissue. In May 2013, Sir John inspired and entertained a packed Blue Boar lecture theatre with a lecture which both looked back to his time at Christ Church and explained the essential features of his work.
