Half marathon

It was rather a miserable day for the Oxford Half Marathon on Sunday, 13 October, but the autumnal weather certainly didn't dampen the spirits of the House's seven lucky participants who had received free entries from the organisers - grateful for the opportunity to use Christ Church Meadow for part of the course.

Pictured above before the start of the race at the Kassam Stadium are four of the seven:  Leia Clancy, our Alumni Relations Officer, who was running in aid of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and has so far raised nearly £600 towards this worthy cause, Selcuk Topal (2:26), a DPhil student in Astrophysics, who has won Turkey's national challenge to enter space with Lynx (aka AXE Apollo Space Academy) as one of 22 people from 22 countries and will be going to the JFK Space Centre in December for the final challenge, was running his first half marathon in preparation for this event, Dr Tom Hart (1:52), a lecturer in Zoology who has set up "Penguin Lifelines" and is about to embark on a field trip to carry out more research into penguins, and David Wilson (1:37) from the Picture Gallery, sporting a limited edition of the "Save the Hermits" t-shirt. David's running total (ouch!) stands at £305 in aid of conserving these 550 year old fragments of a panel depicting "The Lives of Hermits in the Desert"...

It's not too late to show your support for our intrepid runners who splashed their way over the 13-mile course!  Here is how:

To give to Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, Leia has a Just Giving page at:

'Hermit Savers' may donate via David's Just Giving page at:
or buy one of the limited edition t-shirts (at £14.50) from the Picture Gallery;

and/or help Tom undertake valuable research into penguins via the University's Online Giving Page at:

The three remaining free entrants from Christ Church were Peder Beck-Friis, studying an MPhil in Economics; Alexey Erekhinsky, reading an MSc in Mathematical Finance; and Johannes Schmidt (1:41) who is doing a DPhil in Clinical Medicine.

Christ Church music student Hazel Rowland also completed the Oxford Half Marathon, in a time of 1:39, and is raising money for Oxfam:  her sponsorship page is still open, so any more donations would be greatly appreciated:

Congratulations to everyone who took part in this year's Half Marathon and achieved their goals, despite the elements!
