At the University of Oxford's Encaenia on Wednesday 25 June the distinguished British composer Sir Harrison Birtwistle CH is to be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Music.
That same evening, Christ Church mounts its own tribute to Birtwistle in his 80th birthday year, in the presence of the composer.
At Evensong, at 6pm, the Cathedral Choir, directed by Stephen Darlington, will sing one of Birtwistle's 'Three Motets' taken from the millennial opera The Last Supper (premiered in Berlin in 2000 under Daniel Barenboim).
Then, at 7.15pm, in the Cathedral's North Transept, a short concert of Birtwistle's music will be given by members of ISIS, the Faculty of Music's contemporary music ensemble, including performances by Savitri Grier (violin, ChCh finalist), Becky Lu (piano, current MPhil student at ChCh) and Simon Desbriuslais (trumpet, DPhil graduate ChCh). The concert will be introduced by Jonathan Cross. Admission is free, without ticket.
All are warmly invited to attend these celebratory events.
