Bishop blesses bicyclist

The Bishop of Oxford, the Rt Revd Steven Croft, met Timmy Mallett outside the Cathedral to give him a blessing as the TV presenter sets out on an unusual pilgrimage.

Timmy Mallett, who lives in Berkshire, part of the Diocese of Oxford, is about to set off to cycle more than 2000km to the famous pilgrimage destination of Santiago de Compostela. The journey is likely to take Mr Mallett six weeks, and he will be creating a series of paintings on his way. He described the venture as a having historical, cultural and spiritual aspects.

"This is not a trip for the faint-hearted," he said in a letter to the Bishop.

Bishop Steven was at the Cathedral before taking part in a special Eucharist for headteachers from schools within the family of diocesan church schools.
