Funeral of Mark Whittow

More than 800 people, including the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Louise Richardson, attended the funeral service of the late Dr Mark Whittow in the Cathedral on 12 February.

Dr Whittow was the University Senior Proctor, a Fellow of Corpus Christi and a distinguished historian. He was elected as the new Provost of Oriel just before his death in a road traffic accident in December last year.

Canon Judith Maltby, Chaplain of Corpus Christi, led the funeral procession from Corpus Christi College, where Dr Whittow's coffin had rested overnight, through the streets of Oxford to Christ Church. The Dean of Christ Church, the Very Revd Professor Martyn Percy, officiated and addresses were given by Dr Whittow's widow, Helen Malcolm QC; the Revd Professor William Whyte, Acting President of St John's College; and Professor Jeremy Johns, Professor of the Art and Archeaology of the Islamic Mediterranean, who was Dr Whittow's best man. The Revd Stephen Humphreys, a longstanding family friend, offered the prayer of commendation.

A collection was taken for the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance and the service was followed by a reception at Corpus Christi. Dr Whittow will be laid to rest in the churchyard at St James's, Edgcote in Northamptonshire.
