Trio of charity concerts in the Cathedral this weekend

The Cathedral is gearing up for a busy weekend of charity concerts, in addition to all the usual seasonal services for Advent and Christmas.

On Friday 8 December we are delighted to host the annual Macmillan charity concert (www.ticketsoxford.com, 01865 305305). This popular concert, now in its 21st year, will feature sublime festive music from world-class musicians and literary readings from celebrities including Jeremy Irons, Joanna Trollope and Prue Leith.

The concert will include choral pieces from the Blenheim Singers, conducted by Tom Hammond-Davies, as well as a guest chorister from New College and music in the quad from the Magdalen College School Brass Ensemble. This uplifting event serves a vital role in raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support and helping to fund a specialist nurse for Oxfordshire who supports local cancer sufferers and their families.

The Macmillan concert on Friday night is followed swiftly by the Family Carol Concert on Saturday 9 December at 2.30pm (www.musicatoxford.com, 01865 244806) in aid of Christ Church Music Trust. This is a relatively new venture, in only its second year, but offers the perfect opportunity for families with young children to enjoy favourite traditional Christmas carols and well-known Christmas songs sung by the choristers of Christ Church Cathedral Choir.

And on Sunday 10 December at 8pm the Chapter Charity Concert in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society takes place (www.alzheimers.org.uk/carolsoxford, 0330 333 0804) featuring actor Kevin Whately.
