Farewell to our 2017 Leavers

This week has been the last week of full term at Oxford, and we’ve been saying goodbye to all of our leavers who will be moving on at the end of this academic year.

Christ Church has held a number of events for students who will be finishing their studies in summer 2017, whether as finalists at undergraduate level, or as graduate students who are coming to the end of their postgraduate courses. There are a large number of students who are leaving Christ Church now, so we were pleased to be able to give them a good send off during various events in Eighth Week.

These began on Sunday, when a Leavers’ Evensong was held in the Cathedral. There was music by Rose, Gray and Tchaikovsky, as well as an address given by the Dean, and prayers for all of those who are leaving Christ Church this term. Following the service, there were drinks in the Cathedral Garden for all of the members of college who attended.

On Thursday evening, leavers attended the annual Going Down Party held in the Deanery garden. ‘Going down’ is the term for when students at Oxford finish their studies at the university, after ‘Coming up’ when they begin studying here. Leavers enjoyed drinks on the lawn on the sunny summer evening, and were joined by the Dean as well as their tutors, in a conclusion not only of the academic year, but also our students’ time at Christ Church. Final year students were able to use the occasion to look back on their years here, with the event allowing for reflection but also for the celebration of success and an opportunity to look forward to the next stage in our students’ lives and careers. The Dean gave a speech in which he reminded all of our leavers that, whilst they may be finishing their studies at Christ Church, they will always be members of 'The House' and the community of old members who have studied here, and wished our students the all the best for the future.

There have also been a variety of ways for all of our students to celebrate the end of the academic year even if they are not in their final year. There have been black tie guest dinners, to which students may bring guests to enjoy the last opportunity of the year to experience eating in Hall, as well as other occasions such as the Boat Club Dinner on 16th June to celebrate the bicentenary of Christ Church Boat Club and all of its achievements during the past 200 years, including the particular successes of the men’s and women’s crews this year. Other events have included a BBQ hosted by the Chaplain, and the triennial Commemoration Ball to be held on Saturday.

We’re very proud of all that our students have achieved during their time here, and hope that they have had a fulfilling and successful time at Christ Church. We wish all of our students who are leaving us at the end of the year the very best for the future, and look forward to seeing them return for graduation, and for alumni events at college and further afield.
