Dr Carissa Véliz awarded BSS-Santander Universities Scholarship

Dr Carissa VelizDr Carissa Véliz has been awarded the BSS-Santander Universities Scholarship Award by the BritishSpanish Society Grants Committee and Santander Universities. Dr Véliz will use the award, worth £5000, to publish parts of her dissertation in the form of articles.

The BritishSpanish Society is a registered charity whose object is ‘to promote friendship and understanding between the people of Britain and Spain, through knowledge of each other’s customs, institutions, history and way of life’. Since it was founded in 2008, the Society has awarded scholarships and bursaries to over 40 postgraduate students conducting research in a diverse range of fields. Applicants for the Scholarship must be UK or Spanish nationals engaged in university studies at postgraduate level that have some connection with bilateral links and relationships between the UK and Spain in any field of academic interest.

The award was presented at a ceremony at the residence of the Spanish Ambassador in London on 8 November 2017.

Dr Carissa Véliz joined Christ Church as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow this term, after gaining a DPhil in Philosophy from Christ Church. Prior to this, she had gained a BA in Philosophy at the Universidad de Salamanca, and had earned an MA in Philosophy from the City University of New York Graduate Center. Her research interests include political philosophy, practical ethics, and digital ethics, especially privacy. She will use her scholarship to publish parts of her dissertation, which was on the subject of ethics and the politics of privacy.
