Sermons - Advent, Christmas and Epiphany 2018/19

Throughout the seasons of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany we celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ, our saviour, and recalled the signs of his kingship in his early life: the star above the stable on Christmas night, the visit of the Magi at Epiphany, and Simeon's prophecy at the temple in Jerusalem at Candlemas.

Sermons - Autumn 2018

Just as we saw in nature the leaves turning and the summer flowers dying, so the Autumn season of sermons brought us to the close of the Church year. The final weeks of Ordinary Time brought us All Saints' and All Souls' before reaching the final few weeks before Advent, and the launch of the next cycle of seasons.

Sermons - Summer 2018

After the joy of Easter, the next couple of months moved us through Ascension Day to prayer for the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. We came then to Ordinary Time as the church continued to grow in discipleship.

Sermon Series

At Christ Church we are lucky to exist at the intersection of University, College, and Diocese, and occupy a central position in the vibrant city of Oxford. Our sermon series are an opportunity to engage with the influences of Oxford's long history and active cultural scene.

Christmas 2018

At Christmas we celebrated the incarnation of God in the Baby Jesus, born in a stable in Bethlehem. It was a time of rejoicing in all that God has done for us and of looking forward to the new creation begun in Jesus Christ.

The Season of St Frideswide

Frideswide is Patron Saint of Oxford and of this Cathedral, and in October each year we celebrate her life and the life of the communities she represents.

Throughout Holy Week, Martyn Percy, Dean of the Cathedral, gave short reflections on the theme of Faith, Fear, and Folly.

Beatitudes

During Lent 2018, our series of sermons helped us to respond to Bishop's Steven's call to be more Christ-like, contemplative, compassionate and courageous as individuals and as the Cathedral Church by exploring a specific beatitude each week.

Divine Epiphanies

Over four Sundays in January 2018, sermons were based on religious objects from the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, selected from the exhibition, ‘Imagining the Divine’.
