Support for students during the COVID-19 pandemic

All study spaces in Christ Church Library and the Burn Law Library are currently closed due to the national lockdown (from January 4, 2021).  This policy will be reviewed throughout Hilary Term.  We hope to be able to reopen soon, subject to local restrictions and Government guidelines.

We will continue to support you as you study, teach and research.  Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you need something!

Library staff are on site weekdays to organise Click and Collect, book requests, scanning and postal services.

We are monitoring Government guidelines and so planned services may unfortunately need to change at short notice.

CORE SERVICES (MONDAY-FRIDAY)

If you are currently in Oxford and can come to the Library, the following services are available:

  Returning books

·          Books can be returned to the College Library Monday to Friday 2-4pm.

·          Please drop these off on the Book Returns trolleys found in the entrance hall of the Library main building.

·          When returning items, please adhere to social distancing guidelines.  No more than two people may enter the library at one time. If there are already two people inside, please wait on the library steps forming a socially distanced queue.

·            In line with government and University guidance, you are expected to wear a face covering when collecting items from our Click and Collect collection point.  Please sanitise your hands on entry to the Library building.

Click and Collect

·       Readers who are in Oxford should continue to make use of the Click and Collect Service via SOLO. Books can be collected from the Click and Collect collection point in the entrance hall of the Library main building, Monday to Friday 10am-12pm.

·       Books requested are placed in pigeon holes arranged alphabetically by your surname initial e.g. John Smith – ‘S’ pigeon hole.

·       Please aim to collect within two working days, by 12pm. E.g. If you are notified on Monday that your request is ready, please collect by 12pm on Wednesday.

·       When collecting items, please adhere to social distancing guidelines.  In line with government and University guidance, you are expected to wear a face covering when collecting items from our Click and Collect collection point.  Please sanitise your hands on entry to the Library building.

·       Please do not come to the Library unless you have received an email from us.

·       If you live on-site in College accommodations and experiencing any symptoms associated with coronavirus, please do not come to the Library to collect your items, but contact us and we will arrange delivery. Please provide details of the college building and room you are located in when emailing us.

·       Borrowing limits remain at 20/40 for undergraduates/postgraduates.  If you need more, please contact us.

·       All loans will be due for renewal or return on 12th March 2021 (Friday of 8th Week).

·       If you wish to borrow a reference only item, please ask library staff and we will try to accommodate your request, or provide scans.

·       If all the copies of the book you need are already on loan, and an e-book is not available on SOLO please tell us and we will do our best to order in additional copies.

·       If another library you would normally use is closed and you can’t get access to books there, please send on titles and we’ll order as many as we can.

Scan and Deliver

If you require additional resources, the following services may be provided if feasible (and where staffing permits):

·          Up to 1 chapter/ 1 article or 5% of a book (whichever is greater) can be scanned by staff and supplied by email.

·          This service is for individual research use only. You may not share, distribute, or post it elsewhere online. We ask that you agree to our ‘Copyright declaration’ before we proceed with your scan request.

·          If a particular chapter(s) of a title on your course is in high demand let us know in advance and we will try and provide the cohort with a shareable link.

 Printing services

·          Please use the printer located on the ground level of staircase Peck 9.

If you are currently in Oxford and cannot come to the Library, or if you did not return to College due to the latest government restrictions, the following services are available:

Returning books

·          If you are self-isolating or quarantining, please do not return any books until after you have completed your isolation period. Please make staff aware you have been in isolation when you return any books to the Library.

·          You do not need to return books to the Library if you have not returned to College due to government restrictions.

 Email and Post

·       If not currently in Oxford do not use the Click and Collect service. Email the library (library@chch.ox.ac.uk) and staff will arrange to have items sent to UK addresses.

·          If a copy of the book you need is available as an e-book on SOLO, we encourage you to use the online edition. If you encounter issues with the e-book we can post books to UK addresses.

·          Non-UK addresses will also be considered on a case by case basis.  Very large/heavy or valuable books may have to be exempted from this.

Scan and Deliver

·                Up to 1 chapter/ 1 article or 5% of a book (whichever is greater) can be scanned by staff and supplied by email.

·                This service is for individual research use only. You may not share, distribute, or post it elsewhere online. We ask that you agree to our ‘Copyright declaration’ before we proceed with your scan request.

Existing Loans:

All existing loans will be renewed until Friday 8th Week (12th March).  These batch changes need to be made by the Bodleian so may not show on your account for a few days. If you receive or have received an overdue notice for items from before the vacation, please contact the library to organise renewals.

Ebooks and eresources

You can check what ebooks, ejournals and databases are already available online using SOLO (sign in to get more search results). Resources with a green ‘Online access’ button allow remote access.

Many academic publishers are offering temporary free access to ebook collections and databases. A list can be found on the Bodleian Libraries’ Covid-19 ebooks guide.

If you can’t find an ebook you need, please email rachel.pilgrim@chch.ox.ac.uk and we will look into purchasing access for you if possible.

Contacting the Library

To request any of these services please contact library@chch.ox.ac.uk or call 01865 276169 and provide as much detail as possible about the service you require.
