Christ Church alumna Miranda Kaufmann publishes 'Black Tudors: The Untold Story'

Black Tudors Book CoverChrist Church alumna Miranda Kaufmann (History, 2001) has published her first book, Black Tudors: The Untold Story, exploring the lives of ten Africans during the Tudor and Stuart eras, including a porter, a prince, a sailor, a prostitute, and a silk weaver.

The book, published by Oneworld, brings to light the histories of black Africans who were present at some of the defining moments of the age and provides a fascinating glimpse into their daily lives and how they were treated. Miranda challenges preconceptions of the place of black Tudors in society, describing how they were not only free, but were also paid wages like any other Tudors, as well as being baptised, married and buried by the Church of England. According to the Oneworld website, ‘the untold stories of the Black Tudors, dazzlingly brought to life by Kaufmann, will transform how we see this most intriguing period of history’.

The book has already received excellent reviews in publications such as the Daily Telegraph, Times Higher Education and the Financial Times. David Olusoga, author of Black and British: A Forgotten History, described the book as 'intricately researched and brilliantly written', going on to say, 'through these biographies Kaufmann paints and wider panorama of Renaissance England that was globally aware of Africa and her people. This is history on the cutting edge of archival research but accessibly written and alive with human details and warmth. Black Tudors is a critical book that allows us to better understand an era of our national past that fascinates us like no other'.

Miranda read History at Christ Church, and completed her doctoral thesis on ‘Africans in Britain 1500-1640’ in 2011. Whilst at Christ Church she also developed a love of rugby, and became college captain, gaining two winning Blues after beating Cambridge 20-0 and 25-7 in 2005 and 2006. She is now a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, part of the School of Advanced Study in the University of London, and has worked as a freelance historian and journalist for The Sunday Times, the BBC, the National Trust, English Heritage, the Oxford Companion series, Quercus publishing, and the Rugby Football Foundation.

Black Tudors: The Untold Story was published by Oneworld on 5 October 2017 in the UK, and will be released in the USA on 14 November.
