Christ Church Student Performs with the Alternotives on BBC One’s Pitch Battle

Georgina Lloyd-Owen, who has just completed her first year of studying Music at Christ Church, is part of the Oxford a capella group The Oxford Alternotives who will be performing on BBC One’s prime time show Pitch Battle on Saturday 15 July.

Georgina, who matriculated in 2016, is a cellist, as well as singing soprano in the Alternotives. She said of singing in the group, ‘being in the Alternotives is like a big crazy family. It’s really made Oxford feel like home, being able to connect to different people from different colleges, who are studying different subjects, through singing. I’m a music student, and primarily a cellist, so being able to widen my musical experiences through the group and generally have a laugh was great for keeping me grounded and taking the edge off a hard week!’

The Alternotives are Oxford’s oldest a capella group, founded in 1993, and often perform at university events such as balls, as well as further afield. The group is made up of both male and female students from the University of Oxford, and performs a wide range of music, from genres including RnB, disco, pop and soul. They have toured the USA and performed at the Edinburgh Fringe, where they will also have a show this summer, and have won several awards.

Elaborating on the group’s musical identity, Georgina explained, ‘as a group we cover a range of musical genres, often taking well-known songs and giving them an interesting choral or contemporary twist. This can be from member Oscar Darwin’s arrangements of David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’ and ‘Wicked Game’ by Chris Isaac, all the way to Disclosure and Rihanna. Pop and classical influences are central to the group, and this year we have many strong choral voices singing songs they usually wouldn’t have the chance to!’

Pitch Battle, first shown on BBC One in 2017, sees 30 top choral groups compete against each other in a series of vocal challenges, with six groups taking part every week. The Alternotives were picked to audition in London out of a range of extremely talented groups, from musical theatre to soul singers The Oxford Alternotivesand barbershop groups, and were selected to make it through to a final list, before ultimately being chosen to appear on the show. Judges Gareth Malone and singer-songwriter Kelis appear on the show every week with a guest judge, which on Saturday will be American singer Joe Jonas. You can follow all of the news from the programme on their Twitter feed.

We wish Georgina and all of the Alternotives the very best of luck in the competition, and look forward to seeing them perform on Saturday!

The programme will be broadcast on Saturday 15 July at 7:30pm on BBC One.

The Oxford Alternotives will be performing at the Edinburgh Fringe from 3 – 19 August. You can find out more about them on their website, as well as by following them on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
