The Behn Quartet in the Library

Behn Quartet in reheasalOn Sunday 21 February, the Library was delighted to host a visit from the extremely talented Behn Quartet.  The four musicians –  Kate Oswin, Alicia Berendse, Lydia Abell, and Ghislaine McMullin - treated us to Bach’s Prelude from Suite No.2 in D minor for solo cello and to the most beautiful String Quartet in F major by Ravel.

The Behn Quartet is newly-founded, selected for the Davey-Poznanski Quartet Scheme at the Royal Academy of Music, 2015/16.  The quartet was part of the official 40th anniversary celebrations of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, and looks forward to future engagements in London and Aldeburgh, and as part of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival 2016 and the West Cork Chamber Music Festival 2016.

Behn QuartetThe concert was held in memory of Janet McMullin, Assistant Librarian at Christ Church for 25 years, who died suddenly in September last year.  Ghislaine McMullin, the cellist in the quartet, is Janet’s elder daughter. Some years ago, Janet was diagnosed with the horrible illness, multiple sclerosis, but she endured it with astonishing courage and never allowed it to define her.  A collection was taken after the concert in aid of the MS Society and raised the terrific sum – for which many thanks to all those who attended – of £355.
