Happy Birthday, Mr Carroll!

Just a few days ago, on 27 January, was Lewis Carroll's birthday. There is no special anniversary this year. However, since he once was Sub-Librarian and since the Library at Christ Church houses such a significant Carroll collection (which is currently the object of intense study and scrutiny), we could not miss the opportunity to celebrate a little by launching our first web pages revealing some of the treasures of the Lewis Carroll collection online.

In Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the heroine ponders "What is the use of a book without pictures or conversations'. We aim to please her, by launching pages full of unique and exciting pictures...

The Lewis Carroll Collection web pages reveal high-resolution digital copies of manuscripts and unique or rare items of Carroll material and provide a viewing environment for these images, allowing viewers to flip through the pages, zoom in and read very detailed descriptions.

Although a significant part of the collection has been digitized, much more will follow. Access to all fully digitized resources is made available both through this website, or via the Digital Bodleian portal. Crucially for research, our digitized items are integrated with the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF). All this gives scholars an unprecedented level of uniform and rich access to image-based resources hosted around the world.
