Diocesan Canon Precentor appointed to new role

Grant BaylissThe Revd Dr Grant Bayliss, Diocesan Canon Precentor, is leaving the Cathedral to take up a new role as Head of Curate Training for the Diocese of Oxford.

Grant’s current role as Diocesan Canon Precentor means he spends half of his time working at the Cathedral and the other half working for the Diocese of Oxford facilitating the strand of the curates’ training known as the ‘hard skills’ programme.

He takes over as Head of IME2 from the Revd Dr Beren Hartless. The role involves arranging training courses on mission and evangelism, media, churchyards, church buildings and much more. It also involves ongoing pastoral support for curates as well as ongoing assessments throughout their training, which usually lasts three years.

Grant, who is due to start in November, said: ‘Working with those answering God’s call to ordained ministry has been one of the great privileges of my life. I have always felt I have learnt as much as I’ve taught and been humbled and inspired time and time again. Here in Oxford, we are rightly proud of our training programmes and I relish the chance to build on that strong base and respond to the emerging new challenges as Head of IME 2.’

‘We are all sorry to be losing Grant from the Cathedral, but delighted that he will continue to contribute to the life and work of the Diocese, and in our crucial area of education,’ said the Dean of Christ Church, the Very Revd Prof. Martyn Percy.

‘We wish him all the best for this next phase of his ministry, and our prayers are with him and the family as they move. Grant has given so much to the Cathedral and Chapter during his time here, and our gratitude for his gifts is considerable. God’s blessing be upon him and all the family.’
