New Chapter for Christ Church Cathedral Choir

A new chapter begins this weekend for the Christ Church Cathedral Choir when new choristers and lay clerks are welcomed into the stalls, including the first female lay clerk.

The ‘installation’ of the new members marks the beginning of the academic year and takes place annually. This year the choir is welcoming five boy choristers, three of whom are members of one family, and all of whom are pupils at the Cathedral School; and five adults, known as ‘clerks’.

The clerks sing the alto, tenor and bass lines. One of the new members this academic year is Elizabeth Nurse, joining the ranks as an alto for one year, who will be the first female clerk of Christ Church Cathedral Choir. The other new clerks are Charlie Hodgkiss (Tenor), Piers Kennedy (Bass), Chris Murphy (Bass), and Tim Parsons (Alto).

The Cathedral will also be welcoming Simon Hogan who has been appointed interim Sub Organist for one term before the arrival of Benjamin Sheen in January.

The installation takes place during Choral Evensong at 6pm on Saturday 12 October, when the choir will be singing Swayne’s ‘Magnificat’, Holst’s ‘Nunc Dimittis’ and ‘God’s grandeur’ by Leighton as the anthem.

Professor Steven Grahl, Organist, said: “As always, it is a great pleasure to welcome a number of new members of the cathedral choir. In particular, I am delighted to welcome Elizabeth Nurse, who is the first female clerk of the Christ Church Cathedral Choir, and who will sing as an alto lay clerk for the academic year 2019/20.”

Elizabeth Nurse said: “It’s an honour to sing with the Cathedral Choir and to support worship at Christ Church. The formal installation will be a special event and I'll treasure this year working with the choir and Christ Church community.”

Christ Church Cathedral has four choirs, each with its own distinctive identity. They are the Cathedral Choir; Frideswide Voices of Christ Church; the Cathedral Singers; and the College Choir. All take their turn leading worship in our historic cathedral. At other times of year (especially during August) we welcome visiting choirs from around the world.

Boys interested in joining the choir are invited to the annual ‘Be A Chorister for a Day’ on Saturday 1 February 2020. For more information, contact the Registrar, Mrs Clare James, on 01865 260650 or registrar@cccs.org.uk
