The Season of St Frideswide

Frideswide is Patron Saint of Oxford and of this Cathedral, and at this time of year we celebrate her life and the life of the communities she represents. At Christ Church we are lucky to exist at the intersection of University, College, and Diocese, and occupy a central position in the vibrant city of Oxford.

During this season of Frideswidetide we welcome representatives from across the Diocese and City:

  • at the Court Sermon, which marks the beginning of the legal year, we welcome Magistrates, Solicitors, representatives of Local Government, the Police, the Military, and many others from across Oxfordshire;
  • at the Patronal Eucharist we celebrate the life, legend and legacy of Saint Frideswide (c.650–727), founder of the first church on this site and remembered as founder and patron of cathedral, university and city of Oxford;
  • at the St Frideswide Civic Service we will see a gathering of Oxfordshire Schools, representatives of Oxford University and Oxford Brookes University, the Lord Mayor, the Lord Lieutenant, the High Sheriff, the Bishop of Dorchester and others.

These special services in the life of Oxford and Oxford's Cathedral - all at 6pm - are open to everyone.

For those who were unable to attend, or who would like the opportunity to listen again, a recording of the Court Sermon is below as well as the orders of service for the Patronal Eucharist and the Civic Service.
