The son of Rupert K.W. Owen and his wife, Annie, A.G.L Owen was born at 2 St. Margaret’s Road, Oxford in 1890. He had three older sisters. His father who was an Oxford graduate was retired from the Home Civil Service.
In 1901, he was a boarder at Hazlehurst School, Ticehurst, East Sussex. By then, his parents were living at Highfield, Upper Maze Hill, St. Leonards, Sussex. It is thought that he went on to Malvern College. He Matriculated in 1908. In 1909, he coxed the College boat at Henley. His weight was 8st. 9lbs.
In 1912, he married Gwenllian [Gwendoline] Helena Hastings at Oxford. She was 19 years old. In 1901, she was living with her aunt, Mrs. Farrington, at Glebe House, St Clements, Oxford. By 1911, they were living at 17 Edith Road, Grandpont, Oxford. Gwen was employed as a “furrier’s clerk”.
They had three sons.
John Alfred Price Owen born in Wandsworth in 1913 was educated at St. Bees School and Cranwell and became a Wing Commander. He married and had children.
David William Hew Owen was born in Wandsworth in 1918. He was educated at Spring Grove Secondary School, Isleworth and Haileybury and was a Flight Lieutenant [39332] with 102 Squadron when he was killed on 20 May 1940. He is buried with his crew in Hamegicourt Churchyard Coll. grave 2-5. [Airborne 2029 20 May 1940 from Driffield to bomb a bridge spanning the River Oise at Ribemont. Robin James Owen born in Sculcoates, Yorkshire in 1921. He was educated at Haileybury. He was an Aircraftman 2nd Class [1626172] and died on 7 November 1944. He is buried in Maidenhead Cemetery Sec. C.C. Row V. Grave 53
AGL served in World War 1. On 27 January 1916, he was gazetted as a captain in the Royal Sussex Regiment.
In 1920, he published “ Modern bridge: including the "Laws of auction bridge", "Three-handed royal auction bridge", and "Etiquette Of royal auction bridge".
His career and employment are not known. He lived at 1 Camley Gardens, Pinkneys’s Green, Maidenhead.
He died on 11 January 1941 in a bombing raid on Brooke's Market, Brooke's Court, Holborn. WC.
Administration was granted to his wife. He left £427-14-9
She wrote to the college after his death and died in Windsor in 1982.
