Edgar was the youngest of the three sons of Ludovic Heathcoat-Amory who died of wounds in 1918, and his wife Mary Stuart Bannatyne. He was born at Chevithorne Barton, Tiverton on August 30th 1917.

Like his brothers, he was educated at the Malthouse School, Langton Matravers and Eton. He Matriculated in 1936 and followed his father and eldest brother to Christ Church.

He married Sonia Myrtle Denison on September 7th 1940. They had a son and a daughter.

At the outbreak of war, he joined the Royal Artillery in which his father had served, and was a Major with the 126th Field Regiment when he was killed in Normandy on June 23rd 1944.

He is buried in Ranville War Cemetery Plot III. B. 14.

He is commemorated on the Malthouse School Memorial and  in St. Georges Parish Church, Langton Matravers and in the Royal Memorial Chapel, Sandhurst.
