The Revd Dr Zachary Guiliano

My work at the cathedral focuses on leading worship, and helping to organise pastoral care, along with visitor, volunteer, and congregational engagement.

Before arriving at Christ Church, I was a Career Development and Research Fellow in Early Medieval History at St Edmund Hall (2020–23), as well as the College Chaplain. I have served as a member of the Academic Board of the Archbishop of Canterbury's Lambeth Research Degrees in Theology since early 2023.

While studying for my PhD at Cambridge, I was a Gates Cambridge Scholar, and while at Harvard, I was a Williams Fund Scholar and served as Kellogg Fellow at the Episcopal Chaplaincy. 

In history, I teach Prelims, European and World History 300-900, and British and Irish History, 300-1100, and am available to teach Finals papers in the same period. I am also available for Further Subjects like the Carolingian Renaissance or Latin texts: Einhard and Asser, and have examined undergraduate theses.

In Theology, I have examined undergraduate and graduate theses, and am available to teach Medieval Religions, History of Doctrine, Augustine, and History and Theology of the Early Church. 

My research focuses on the development of biblical interpretation in the Christian Church, particularly in Latin texts from the fifth century to the tenth. I have drawn attention to the material conditions necessary for the activity of exegesis, ranging from institutional support to the production of manuscripts.

My prizewinning first monograph, The Homiliary of Paul the Deacon, considered a collection of sermons created at the court of Charlemagne, along with its earliest manuscripts. I am currently finishing a second monograph on the Venerable Bede's commentary On Luke.
