Qualifications

BA (Sydney); DEA (Paris); Doctorat (Paris)

Academic background

I first studied French and English literature at the University of Sydney, and then went to Paris with a French Government Scholarship to complete a Diplôme d’Etudes Approfondies in French literature at the University of Paris VII (this is now called a ‘Master 2’). I stayed at Paris VII to do a Doctorat, looking at French colonial literature at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. I taught English language and literature briefly at the Université de Toulouse-le-Mirail, and was then a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in French at the University of Newcastle. I have been a tutor at Christ Church since January 2005.

Undergraduate teaching

French language, translation, and literature (mostly nineteenth and twentieth centuries).

Research interests

My research focuses on the 19th-century novel, colonial and 'exotic' writing, 20th-century francophone writing, Baudelaire and Proust.
