Roger Francis was born in Shrewsbury, the second son of the Rev. William H. Draper, at the time Vicar of Holy Cross, and later Rector of Adel, Leeds from 1898 to 1920, and his second wife, Emilie Augusta, daughter of Fitzherbert Wright Esq of Swanwick, Derbyshire.

In 1901, he was staying at 4 Emperor’s Gate, London with his sister and a governess.

He was educated at Eton, and from 1909-12 at Christ Church, where he obtained a B.A. degree in 1914.

After his studies he travelled abroad for a year, and in December married Miss Anna Lowell Gardiner, daughter of Mr Robert H. Gardiner of Gardiner, Maine in the U.S.A, after a 12-month engagement.

Back in England, he joined the staff of Messrs Barclay & Co., Oxford branch, enlisting on the outbreak of hostilities. In May l915, he was promoted Captain in the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was killed in action at Suvla Bay, in the Dardanelles Campaign. He is remembered on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey Panel 171 to 173 and also on the Adel War Memorial.

His Estate amounted to £250. 14s, his address is shown as Old Bank, Oxford. Probate granted to Charles Lupton solicitor, attorney of Anna Lowell (sic) Draper.
