Arthur Henry Gilbert was the youngest of the seven children of John Henry Clarke, a solicitor, and Registrar of the District Probate Court of Bristol, and Lizzie Agnes Clarke of Amherst House, Clifton Park, Bristol.

He was educated at Radley, and at the time of the 1911 census was staying in High Wycombe, described as ‘undergraduate, Oxford‘. He went down from Christ Church in 1913.

He commenced Service September 1914 in the ranks before being commissioned 2nd Lieutenant 3rd Northamptonshire Regt. He served in France and was mentioned in Dispatches in 1915 and 1916. Believed killed in action on the Somme, 9 September 1916.

His Estate amounted to £385 3s 11d. Probate granted to Charles Cyril Clarke, solicitor.
