Charles Frederick Robert was born in Reading, the elder son of Francis Carew Charles Barnett, a banker, and Emily Ursula Hamilton.

He was educated at Eton and Christ Church. On 4 February 1903, he married Cicely Frances Cornish, daughter of the Revd Stephen Cornish of Gloucester.

On the 1911 census, Charles is a Motor Car Agent and Garage Proprietor, and they are living in Gloucester. He joined the Gloucestershire Regiment on 4 August 1914 and was killed at Hill 60, around three miles south-east of Ypres, on 20 April 1915, three weeks after the birth of the youngest of his four children.

His Estate amounted to £5085 4s 1d. Probate granted to his father and Charles Vaughan Knight MD
