Archibald Robert was born in the City of London, the elder son of the Rev. Robert Henry Hadden, Vicar of two deprived East End parishes, St Botolph Bishopsgate and St Botolph Aldgate, and his wife, Eva Prudence. The family home was Hazel Hatch in Adlestone, Surrey.
While he was a boy his father returned to St Mark North Audley Street (where he had served his title) in Mayfair, as the much-loved vicar until an early death in 1909. He was also Chaplain-in-Ordinary to Queen Victoria, and later an Honorary Chaplain to King Edward VII until his early death in 1909.
Archibald was educated at Westminster School and went up to Christ Church in 1907. In 1911 he was living with his widowed mother, brother and sister at 34 Gloucester Place, Marylebone and was employed as a Clerk.
On 6 May 1915, he married Evelyn Forster Tunnicliffe, the daughter of a surgeon in Barnet, Hertfordshire.
In February 1909, he was gazetted a 2nd Lieutenant in the 9th County of London Battalion of the London Regt [Queen Victoria’s Rifles]. He was mobilised at the outbreak of war and by the time of his death he held the rank of Captain. He was killed in action in April 1918 and in August probate was granted to his wife of Hazel Hatch, Addlestone Surrey. He left £463 4s 7d.
With his younger brother, Major E W R Hadden, he is commemorated on the Memorial to the Great War Dead at St Augustine’s Church, Addlestone. Surrey
