Age 36
Son of Ernest Pitman and his wife Frances Isabel Butler. He had two younger sisters. Ernest’s father, Sir Isaac Pitman, was the designer of the shorthand writing system.
John was killed on service in Palestine on 1 October 1943. He is buried at Khayat Beach War Cemetery, Israel.
He is commemorated along with his brother, Peter Pitman Butler, and his sister, Honor Salmon, on the War Memorial in the churchyard of St. Peter’s Church, Dyrham. Their parents lived at The Cottage, Dyrham.
